Venedegar ends title drought to capture Qatar Cup

The Peninsula

Venedegar, helmed by Alexander Reznikov, ended a year long wait of title by winning the Qatar Cup – the feature race of yesterday’s fifth Race Meeting at Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s Al Rayyan Park.

After failing in nine attempts since the victory last November, the Mohammed bin Hamad Khalifa Al Attiyah-owned 4-year-old gelding displayed a top show to clinch win by 1¾-length in the 1700m challenge.

It was a maiden appearance for Venedegar at Al Rayyan Park that lent the winning squad QR57,000 in the  QR100,000 event.

Daneyan, ridden by JP Guillambert took second position and won QR22,000 while High Commander (GB), with Alberto Sanna in the saddle picked QR11,000 for winning third position in the event.

Also yesterday, Soufiane Saadi claimed two victories winning the Thoroughbred Novice Plate and Thoroughbred Handicap titles.

He guided Ernest Aldrich to win in Thoroughbred Novice Plate and then rode X Force for his second win.    In Local Thoroughbred Handicap, Ali Bin Saeed Aljafali Al Nuaimi’s Ajal recorded a huge 9¾-length victory, with Alberto Sanna riding the Majed Seifeddine-trained colt.

Lehwaila, Leafy Moss, Ghali Al Athman and Anees also claimed victories, yesterday.

Today’s race meeting will also include a total of eight races with riders eyeing the Losail Cup – the top prize of the day.
