Tayf impresses as Thomas wins Qatar Gold Sword in spectacular fashion

Ronan Thomas savoured one of his more memorable days as a jockey by guiding Umm Qarn’s Tayf (Amer x Djelmila) to a Gr 1 P/A Qatar Gold Sword victory on turf at the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club’s (QREC) Al Rayyan Park. Thomas entered the final race with hopes of adding to his three wins on the day and he did exactly that.

Thomas partnered the Alban de Mieulletrained 9YO horse to a length victory in the 2000m run for 4YO+ Purebred Arabians. Tayf clocked a time of 2:08.57 as Thomas won the top prize of $142,500. Mon’nia, ridden by Tomas Lukasek, finished in second spot while Julian Smart-trained Ebraz, who had Albert Sanna in the saddle, had to settle for the third place.


Lukasek won $55,000 while Sanna collected $27,500 for his efforts. In a commanding win, Eng. Hassan Ali Alabdulmalik’s Seeyoubyme (FR) (Siyouni) landed the Gr 1 Qatar Gold Trophy at Al Rayyan Park. Jockey Faleh Bughanaim steered the Debbie Mountain-trained 5YO gelding to a 2¾-length victory in the 2200m run for 4YO+ TBs. Pedro Cara, ridden by JP Guillambert, and Pazeer, who had Sanna in the saddle, finished in second and third spots respectively. Bughanaim won $142,000 while Guillambert got richer by $55,000. Sanna won $27,500.Producing a late surge in the day’s sixth race, Mohammed Bin Hamad Khalifa Al Attiyah’s Sir Monlau (FR) (Al Mamun Monlau) won the Qatar Silver Sword. Soufiane Saadi rode the Alban de Mieulle-trained colt to a 1¼-length win in the 1850m run for 4YO P/As. Sir Monlau clocked a time of 2:00.67 as Saadi won $85,500. Tarek Du Soleil, ridden by Bughanaim, finished second worth $33,000. Djafar, who was ridden by Guillambert, ended in third spot worth $16,500. Also yesterday, Umm Qarn’s Sealine (QA) (Amer x Jaljalah) landed the Qatar Silver Trophy. Carlos Henrique rode the Alban de Mieulle-trained 7YO horse to a neck win in a time of 1:42.24 in the mile run for 4YO+ Local Purebred Arabians. Henrique won $45,600. Aahil (Ronan Thomas, $17,600) and Lekhraib (Marco Casamento, $8,800) sealed the next two places out of 11 entries. Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari’s Pom Malpic (FR) (Pomellato) completed a double winning Al Wajba Trophy with Lukasek in the sadde. With Lukasek holding the reigns, the Ali Al Kubaisitrained filly galloped to a ½-length win in the 1850m Class 2 run for 3YO TBs.



Pom Malpic clocked 1:52.79 as Lukasek won the top prize of $45,600. The Eng. Osama Omer Al Dafea-owned and trained Taxiwala (IRE)(Holy Roman Emperor) completed a hat-trick landing Sealine Sprint Trophy when jockey Thomas guided the 4YO to a 5½-L win in the 6f Class 1 run for 3YO+ TBs. This was Thomas’ third successive win of the day. In the day’s second running, Umm Qarn’s homebred Equinoxe (QA) (Atlantic Air x Thurayya) won the Local Thoro u g h b r e d event with T h o m a s riding the Alban de Mieulletrained 4YO colt to a 2 - l e n g t h win in the 1850m run. This was T h o m a s ’ second win of the day completed in a time of 1 : 5 2 . 0 4 . Thomas won the top prize of $45,600. Umm Qarn’s Al Arabie (FR) (Al Mamun Monlau x Altesse D’aroco) won the Purebred Arabian Maiden Plate in spectacular fashion to start the day’s proceedings. Thomas rode the Alban de Mieulle-trained 4YO filly to a 3¼-length win in the 7f run for 3-6YOs.
