Olympic bronze medallists and former Asian Games gold winners Cherif Younousse and Ahmed Tijan of Qatar yesterday made it to the Round of 12 of at the World Beach Pro Tour’s second Elite16 event in Ostrava, Czechia.
Cherif and Ahmed who are aiming for their fifth Beach Pro Tour podium, beat Brazilian qualifiers Gonçalves Oliveira Júnior Evandro and Diego Mariano Lanci Arthur 2:1 (17-21, 21-18, 15-10) before losing to fourth-ranked Swedish pair David Ahman and Jonatan Hellvig 1:2 (18-21, 21-17, 15-17) and Dutch duo Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen 1:2 (19-21, 21-18, 16-18) in two thrilling match-ups.
Despite the two losses, the former World No.1 pair managed to finish second in Group B, thereby booking a placed in the next round.
Today, they will take on Brazil’s Pedro Solberg and Carvalhaes Gustavo Albrecht for a place in the quarter-finals at the venue built next to the iconic Lower Vitkovice industrial heritage site.
