Costa Rica stun Japan with late 1-0 win

Japan failed to ensure their place in the World Cup knockout rounds as Keysher Fuller's late goal earned Costa Rica a 1-0 Group E victory.

Japan made five changes to their side that secured a shock win over Germany, and the side were frustrated by Costa Rica’s tight defensive, before Fuller struck with Costa Rica's first shot on target at the tournament in the 81st minute.

The result leaves both teams on three points, with Spain, who top the group on goal difference, facing Germany later this evening whereby a victory for Spain would all but guarantee their progression to the round of 16.

After beating Germany in their opener, and with Costa Rica having received a 7-0 humiliation by Spain, many expected Japan to come out on top.

However, Japan boss Hajime Moriyasu opted for rotation over continuity, making five changes, and that resulted in a subdued performance that culminated in Group E being blown wide open.
