MANGOUSTINE impresses on debut

QREC

Owned in partnership by Infinity Nine Horses, Ecurie Des Monceaux, Qatar Racing Limited and Alexandre Giannotti two-year-old filly MANGOUSTINE (Dark Angel x Zotilla) got her career off to the perfect start when taking the Prix De La Reboursiere (Maiden) at Deauville on Sunday, August 22nd.

Mangoustine is trained by Frederic Rossi and was ridden to success by Christophe Soumillon.

Having broken sharply from stall one, Mangoustine was taken back by Soumillon and was settled in mid-division of the ten runner field. The free-going Spirited Account (Charm Spirit) led the field through the opening stages of the 1,600m contest. Mangoustine travelled well against the rail, despite being shuffled back on the turn for home. On the run-in Mangoustine was momentarily caught on the heels of the leaders but once switched out for a run, the filly picked up smartly. Inside the final 200m Mangoustine closed down the eventual runner-up Albea (Nathaniel) and went on to score by half a length. Mademoiselle Rose (Shalaa) endured some trouble in running and produced some good late work to take third.

Mangoustine’s trainer Frederic Rossi said after the race; “The filly has won that throughout the race, she is very professional. The jockey nearly fell off coming out of the stall but he told me after that he knew he was on the best filly. We will keep her to this distance for the moment. I hope the ground won’t start to get too soft otherwise we will have to wait until next year with her. I think she will be a good three-year-old. I worked her in front last week and she worked below par so I told Christophe to not get to the front too early as she has a tendency to pull up. Looking at her origins, she will definitely get further in time. We will have a chat with her owners now, but it is not really our style to over race our two-year-old’s. She may have another run or two before going on a winter break. She will come back in the spring and attack some of the better races. For me, she is our best two-year-old.”

Bred by Ecurie Des Monceaux, Lordship Stud and Qatar Bloodstock Limited, Mangoustine is by Yeomanstown Stud’s Dark Angel (Acclamation). Her dam, Zotilla (Zamindar) raced once at three. The second dam Louvain (Sinndar) was a Group Three winner in the US and has produced dual Group One winner Flotilla (Mizzen Mast) and unbeaten Listed winner Big Five (Frankel).
