Qatar's football national team qualified for the Asia Football Championship in China in 2023, after defeating visitors Oman 1-0, in the match played Monday at Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Al Sadd Sports Club.

The match was part of the 8th round of Group E of the AFC World Cup qualifiers that are taking place in Doha with Qatar, Oman, India, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan all participating. Hassan Al Haydous scored the only goal of the match from a penalty kick in the 40th minute.

Although the Qatari national team will not be concerned with qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup given their status as the host nation, they are the 3rd team to reach AFC 2023 behind Syria and Japan. China has qualified automatically given it is the host nation.

Qatar national team head coach Felix Sanchez congratulated his players and the fans for qualifying for AFC 2023 in China, after defeating Oman 1-0 earlier today.

Speaking in the press conference after the match, Sanchez said he was happy to seal the qualification, especially given they are the title holders for the 2019 edition. He said that the match against Oman national team was difficult, especially in light of the absences the Qatari team was struggling with due to injury, in addition to the injury of Musab Mohammed at the beginning of the match, and Boualem at the end, noting that the players performed well throughout the two halves of the match, which made them decide the outcome of the match in their favour.

Sanchez pointed out that the fact that the Qatari national team was the titleholder made opponents more cautious, but praised his team for always finding a way to get the win. He also shared his view must get a good period of rest now after a long and intense season. He also stressed that the matches will serve as good preparation for World Cup 2022.
