QVA HOLDS DRAW FOR THE AMIR VOLLEYBALL CUP 2019-2020 QUALIFIERS

The Qatar Volleyball Association held the draw for the 42nd edition of the His Highness Amir Volleyball Cup for the 2019-2020 season from October 8 to 30, with participation of all clubs in the Senior Men`s League this season, QVA said in a news release on its official website volleyball.qa on Tuesday.

The drawing of lots at the QVA Hall was witnessed by QVA Assistant Secretary Mr Saeed Salem Al-Jamaani and Technical Expert Mr Hussein Imam, with representatives of participating clubs and sports media taking part.

The tournament will be played from the preliminary round in the league system of single round-robin. Six teams (ranked 5th to 10th places) have already distributed to two groups including Al-Gharafa, Al-Shamal and Al-Wakra in the first group and Qatar, Al-Sadd and Al-Khor in the second group in the qualifiers of the quarter-finals between October 8 and 13.

Top four in the Senior Men`s League this season consisting of champions Police, runners-up Al-Arabi, third place Al-Rayyan and fourth place Al-Ahli have already advanced to contest the knockout quarter-final matches.

The draw also revealed the features of the quarter-finals, where the League champions Police were placed at the top of the first group, and AlArabi (runner-up) led the charge in the second group.

In the knock-out quarter-finals, Police are scheduled to take on the team finishing second place in the second group qualifiers (Al-Khor, Al-Sadd or Qatar), while Al-Arabi will meet the team finishing first in the first group qualifiers (Al-Gharafa, Al-Shamal or Al-Wakrah).

Also in the quarter-finals, League third place Al-Rayyan will play the team finishing first in the second group qualifiers and League fourth place Al-Ahli will challenge the team finishing second in the first group qualifiers.

According to the road map revealed on the draw, surprises are expected during the tournament stages.

The four winning teams from the quarter-finals will next compete in the semi-finals, where the format of best of three matches will be used. The top two teams in the semi-finals will then battle it out in the final showdown to determine the first and second places.

Earlier on Monday afternoon, Police, Al-Arabi, Al-Rayyan and Al-Ahli had also conducted new coronavirus (COVID-19) swabs on players and technical and administrative teams at the women’s sports hall in Aspire Zone in line with the precautionary measures and in cooperation with the Ministry of Public Health and Aspetar Hospital, as part of the necessary arrangements to run Qatar Cup competitions.

The Qatar Cup will start on Wednesday, with Police meeting Al-Ahli, and Al-Arabi taking on Al-Rayyan in the first-leg round of the semi-finals. The contest will be renewed on Friday with the return round (second match between them), and on Sunday (October 11), the decisive match will be held in case A tie between any two teams. The final match will be held on Wednesday, October 14 at the same hall, and the meetings will be managed by the accredited international referees.
