Switzerland through to last 16 as Serbia sent home

Switzerland sealed their place in the World Cup knockout stages, beating Serbia in a five-goal thriller at Stadium 974 as the group stages came to a close.

Switzerland’s Xherdan Shaqiri put his side ahead inside 20 minutes, but Serbia were quick to turn it around, with 35th and 44th-minute goals from Dušan Vlahovic and Aleksandar Mitrovic putting them in a position to qualify.

However, Switzerland's Breel Embolo equalised on the stroke of half-time when he chipped in from close range, dampening the Serbs’ hopes of qualifying. Serbia knew that nothing less than a win would award them the remaining place in the last-16, but it was Switzerland who got back ahead when play resumed as Remo Freuler made it 3-2 in their favour.

Group G end the group stages with Brazil at the top on six points, while Switzerland sit in second, also on six points. Cameroon and Serbia bow out of the competition, sitting in third place with four points, and fourth place with one point, respectively.

Switzerland will now face Portugal in the Round of 16 on Tuesday night at 10pm at Lusail Stadium, while Brazil will come up against South Korea on Monday at Stadium 974.
