Argentina beat Poland 2-0 as both sides qualify to round of 16

Argentina secured a 2-0 win over Poland, who also qualified for the knockout round on goal difference having finished level on points with Mexico.

The first half an hour went by without so much as a chance for either side, but just before the half hour mark Argentina had a flurry of opportunities which ultimately came to nothing.

A controversial penalty went Lionel Messi’s way, but Wojciech Szczesny made a fantastic save to deny him the chance to put Argentina ahead.

Both of Argentina’s goals came in the second half from Premier League footballers, as Brighton's Alexis Mac Allister and Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez secured their side’s place at the top Group C.

Mac Allister gave Argentina the lead they deserved when he converted Nahuel Molina's cross from the left a minute into the second half, scoring his first ever international goal, and Alvarez doubled their lead, firing into the top corner in the 67th minute.

Poland also found themselves qualifying, despite not having had a single shot on target throughout the match - and were set to progress for having fewer yellow cards than Mexico - until Saudi Arabia scraped a late goal in stoppage time.

Group C end the group stages with Argentina at the top on 6 points, while Poland sit in second place on four points. Mexico and Saudi Arabia bow out of the competition, sitting in third place with 4 points, and fourth place with three points, respectively.

The Argentina will now face the Australia in the Round of 16 on Saturday night at 10pm at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, and Poland will come up against France on Sunday at 6pm at Al Thumama Stadium.
