All three of the game’s goals came from players from the English Premier League, as Brighton’s Moises Caicedo cancelled out a penalty by Watford's Ismaila Sarr before Chelsea defender Kalidou Koulibaly's side-footer won it.

Ecuador needed just a point to progress, but were denied by a spirited Senegalese side, spurred on by their feisty fans at Khalifa International Stadium.

Watford winger Sarr scored from the spot, after being fouled in the box by by Ecuador’s Piero Hincapie to give the African champions a well-deserved lead. Ecuador made the best of their first chance of the match, as Caicedo swept home Felix Torres' set up, but Koulibaly's composed finish immediately regained the lead for Senegal, who knew only a victory would be enough to send them through, unless Qatar were to beat The Netherlands at Al Bayt Stadium.

Group A end the group stages with The Netherlands at the top on 7 points, and Senegal sit in second place on six points. Ecuador and Qatar bow out of the competition, sitting in third place with four points, and fourth place with zero points, respectively.

Group B’s matches kick off at 10pm Doha time, with Wales taking on England at Ahmad bin Ali Stadium, and Iran facing the USA at Al Thumama Stadium.
