Iran take on the US in a Group B fixture at Al Thumama Stadium, in a match that will ultimately be viewed through a political lens.
Iran and the US met in the 1998 edition of the World Cup, with Iran going on to beat the Americans 2-1.
In 2022, the two meet once again, with the political divide still very much there.
If Wales has a surprise win when they take on England, the US would then have to win to go through to the World Cup’s knock-out stage, while the Iran only need a draw.
Leaving politics aside for the 90-minute match is not the only thing the two sides need to focus on, the Americans will have to chase a goal if they want to progress to the Round of 16, and their defense needs to watch Iran’s Azmoun and Taremi.
