One Million Trees Initiative, Qatar

QNA

Out of Qatars compliance with the international commitments stipulated in the Paris Agreement regarding reducing carbon emissions, and given the importance of trees in the ecosystem and its implications for human health and the quality of life, as well as boosting its initiatives in the field of mitigating the impacts of climate change and environmental sustainability efforts, the Ministry of Municipality launched Plant One Million Trees initiative in which the State of Qatar seeks to plant one million trees by 2030.

The initiative aims to enhance biodiversity, utilize treated water in irrigation, improve air quality, increase green space, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The initiative is open to all society members, institutions, governmental agencies, the private sector, corporates, schools, educational institutions, youth centers, sports clubs, and all citizens and residents, as registration is made with financial or in-kind support or by practical participation.

The initiative focuses on planting tree seedlings from the local Qatari environment, including Sidr, Ghaf, Samar, and others. These tree seedlings are to be planted in various locations chosen for this purpose, such as the main road axes, Doha ring roads, Al Majd Road, Al Shamal Road, Al Khor Coastal Road, industrial cities, sites of sewage treatment plants and units, rainwater collection sites, cities and municipalities entrances, public parks, schools, residential complexes, and other sites.

The initiative constitutes a significant opportunity to coordinate regional and international efforts to achieve a list of environmental goals, notably enhancing biodiversity in the Middle East through increasing and preserving the green cover and combating desertification which will contribute to the growth of multiple ecosystems and combating climate change.

The State of Qatar has made environmental development and preserving one of the main pillars of Qatar National Vision 2030. Qatar also submitted its updated Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which is in line with the pioneering and ambitious role that Qatar pursues in mitigating climate change and promoting sustainable development.

Out of its commitment to international cooperation and considering the devastating impacts of climate change, Qatar set up its National Climate Change Action Plan 2030 (NCCAP), which identifies 36 mitigation measures and over 300 adaptation measures. The National Climate Change Action Plan is based on the intense involvement of key stakeholders across all sectors, including energy, water, transport, industry, construction, agriculture, education, and scientific research.

The 2019 UN Climate Action Summit, held at the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City in Sep. 2019, came up with nine main tracks. The coalition on track nine, related to Climate Finance and Carbon Pricing, is led by the State of Qatar in alliance with France and Jamaica. (MORE)S M/M RQNA 1650 GMT 2022/11/18
