Fans showed a glimpse of their massive support for hosts Qatar on their FIFA World Cup debut as thousands turned out at a Lusail Boulevard parade to back Al Annabi, yesterday.
Different nationalities residing in Qatar walked hand in hand, donning Qatar team jerseys as the flags of nations qualified for the World Cup fluttered along the road making it a festive atmosphere for all.
The fans, irrespective of age, were seen having a great time, displaying their love for Qatar. Adding to the energetic atmosphere were a bunch of young, enthusiastic skaters showcasing their skills as people played horns while shouting their support for the Al Annabi, who will play their first-ever World Cup match against Ecuador on November 20.
The Boulevard became a melting pot for the fans, mirroring the cosmopolitan nature of Doha, especially with the World Cup around the corner. The pleasant weather was an added advantage as scores of fans moved under the canopy of team flags.
Rashid Al Kuwari, a Qatari football fan, was there to show his support for his home team.
“I love football, I love Qatar and it will be a great event,” the ecstatic Qatar supporter said.
The feeling was so positive that a fan from Pakistan residing in Qatar, Mohammed Faizan, told The Peninsula, “I ask everyone to visit Qatar, it’s a friendly place and is better than anyone expects. All should visit and it will change their perspective.”
The others milling around him agreed to this statement with a round of applause.
Being a weekday didn’t dampen the festive spirit people were thronging into the boulevard as they caught the beats of the World Cup songs playing in the arena.
There were also fans who were conflicted about whom to support.
Friends Ramala, Shabana and Malaha are diehard Argentine supporters, but their love for the host country has made them root for Al Annabis.
“We like Argentina, but also Qatar. So, if Qatar wins, we will be happy or else Argentina,” the trio said.
Yousara from Morocco is expecting more colourful and louder celebrations in the coming days. She and her friends, who work in the hospitality sector, have bought their tickets and is waiting for the World Cup to kick off.
“This is nice, but we expect more colourful and noisy celebrations and that will be fun,” she said.
