Kuwait hosts impressive opening ceremony for GCC Games

Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) President H E Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani attended the opening ceremony of third GCC Games Kuwait 2022 which was held at the Arena Kuwait, yesterday.

The opening ceremony was attended by Kuwait’s Prime Minister H H Sheikh Sabah Al Khaled Al Sabah and presidents of the GCC Olympic Committees. 

Also in attendance were QOC First Vice President Mohamed bin Yousef Al Mana, QOC Second Vice President Dr. Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari and QOC Secretary General Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain. 

The ceremony began with the Kuwaiti national anthem followed by a speech from President of the Kuwait Olympic Committee Sheikh Fahad Nasser Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah. 

The opening ceremony also focused lights on women’s role in Kuwait’s development.

Action at the multi-sporting event, which is being competed among 2000 athletes from six GCC countries, started on Monday, with yesterday’s impressive ceremony marking the official opening of the Games. Medals in 17 sports are at stake in the Gulf sports extravaganza. 

Meanwhile, Qatar players got off to flying start in men’s tennis event, which began at the Sheikh Jaber Al Abdullah International Tennis Complex, yesterday.

Qatar’s Mousa Shannan displayed an impressive performance to beat Bahrain’s Youssef Ashraf 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in men’s singles Round of 32.

Isa Shannan had smooth sailing, beating Jaber Abdulaal of the UAE 6-3, 6-0 in straight sets while Mubarak Shannan also advanced after outclassing UAE’s Omar Ahmadi 6-0, 6-1. 

In the team event at men’s table tennis, Qatar registered back-to-back wins, beating Bahrain and UAE with identical 3-0 score-lines.
